Troubleshooting FAQs

Why can't I see PopSwatter - or the toolbar - on my browser?
If you have downloaded PopSwatter and are not seeing the PopSwatter button or the toolbar on your browser, you may need to enable this toolbar through your browser's menu. To do this:

1) Click on the "View" menu option.

2)  Select "Toolbars".

3) You will see either "My Web Search" or "My Way Search" listed in the dropdown - make sure that there is a check mark next to it. If there is no check mark, click on the toolbar name in order to enable it.

If the toolbar does have a check mark but is not visible on your browser, clear the check mark by clicking on the name of the toolbar. Then repeat the steps above to re-enable it. The toolbar should now appear.

IMPORTANT NOTE TO AOL, MSN, COMPUSERVE AND SBC ISP USERS:

If you are using the built-in browser provided by your ISP, you will NOT see PopSwatter or the toolbar. They do not work with the built-in browser. Instead, you MUST:

1) Launch Internet Explorer 5.01 or above from your desktop.  (Don't have it? Download here.)
2) Find your browser toolbar - it will have either a "My Web Search" or "My Way Search" logo.

I can no longer see PopSwatter or the toolbar on my browser. How can I get them to return?
If you are no longer able to see PopSwatter and the toolbar on your browser, you are likely experiencing one of two scenarios:

1)  You did not close all your open browsers once you downloaded PopSwatter. Please do this now and then reopen a new browser.

2)  You may need to enable the toolbar through your browser's menu. To do this, click on the "View" menu option on your browser and then select "Toolbars". You will see either "My Web Search" or "My Way Search" listed in the dropdown - make sure that there is a check mark next to it. If there is no check mark, click on the toolbar name in order to enable it.

If the toolbar DOES have a check mark but is not visible on your browser, clear the check mark by clicking on the name of the toolbar. Then repeat the steps above to re-enable it. The toolbar should now appear.

How do I know if PopSwatter is working?
Easy! Just check your PopSwatter "Swatted List"! To see it, click on the PopSwatter button on your toolbar and select "Change Preferences". A PopSwatter Settings page will now appear within your browser window (far left). Then click the Swatted List tab to see a list of URLs that have attempted to show you pop-up ads. (The key word there being "attempted.")

You also have the option of having PopSwatter alert you every time it swats a pop-up by making a swatting sound. (Trust us, it's a very satisfying sound.) If you would rather not hear the swatting sound, you can turn the sound off within your PopSwatter window by clicking the PopSwatter button on your toolbar, selecting "Change Preferences", and choosing between hearing the swatting sound "Every time" or "Never".

Why has the number of pop-ups increased since I downloaded PopSwatter?
This is likely due to "adware" that may have been installed on your computer when you downloaded other software off the Internet. To learn more about adware, click here.

A PopSwatter Settings page will appear within your browser window (far left). I want to remove a URL from my Safe List. How do I do this?
Removing a URL from your Safe List only takes a second. To the left of each Safe List URL, you will see "[ - ]". Simply click on the dash between the brackets and that URL will disappear instantly. That's it! If you want to add the URL again later, you will need to enter it into the Allow box above your Safe List like you would with any new URL you want PopSwatter to ignore.

PopSwatter is swatting pop-ups that are on my Safe List. Why? How can I prevent this?
Many times, pop-ups on sites are served by third parties, not the web site, itself. If you are on a site that you have added to your Safe List and notice that a pop-up has been swatted, go to your Swatted List, find the most recent pop-up's URL at the bottom of your list, and click the "[+]" symbol to its left. This will add the swatted URL to your Safe List.

Why is the number of pop-ups in my "Ads swatted" counter not equal to the number of pop-ups in my "Swatted List"?
Your "Ads swatted" counter is the total number of pop-ups that PopSwatter has swatted since you installed it. The Swatted List, on the other hand, shows only those pop-up URLs that have been swatted during your current browser session. (Once you close your browser, your Swatted List resets.)
